new york city on ward. this is what's causing the power outages. just gusted to 50 in boston. notice the wind direction, due north. the cold air from maine is on the way. temperatures in maine are single digits. we're in the 20s in boston and even new york city dropping down to the 20s. as far as the wind chill temperature goes, negative numbers. it's ugly out there to be trapped in your car or thinking about shoveling. you're not going to want to do that until the sun is out. again, tomorrow morning early in the morning the storm pulls away as we go throughout the overnight tonight. it really begins to crank. that will be the peak of it. right now until 5:00 a.m. or so. the winds will start to relax from west to east across new england. snowfall amounts. i had boston in the 24 and 30. it's looking tough. they didn't really get that heavy, heavy snow band like some other areas did so boston will end up anywhere from 18 to 24. it doesn't look at this point like they will get their all time record which are is 27.2. it will definitely be a top ten snowstorm. that is very impressive. >>

,000 flights in and out of the northeast have been canceled. new york city's airports remain officially open at this hour, but most flight activity has ended for the night. already just a few hours into this storm, more than 10,000 electric customers in the northeast have been left without power. and tonight the national guard reports that more than a thousand national guardsmen have been activated in connecticut, massachusetts, and in new york as this region prepares for the worst. joining us now is nbc news meteorologist bill karins. bill, what is the latest at this hour? >> well, melissa we are watching this storm maturing, if we want to call it that. it is growing into intensity. now it is becoming a full-fledged blizzard. in the last hour, about 50,000 people have lost power. and we're going to continue to add to that number to the hundreds of thousands throughout the overnight. that's the worst part of this. losing power in the middle of a winter storm when you don't know how long it's going to be until the power crews can a, get through two or three feet of snow to turn your power bac

them those medals, it was announced today that the new york city teachers pension fund will divest all its money from gun manufacturers. the new york city teachers fund is pulling all of its investments, every cent from five companies that make firearms. that follows after california state teachers pension fund also took its money out of gun companies. and after the mayor of chicago said he is considering whether to get money from his city's pension funds out of the gun companies as well. it also follow cerberus, deciding to sell the giant gun company that they owned. a move cerberus made after a call from its client, a california public employees pension fund questioned their involvement in the firearms business. when investment firms and big pension funds start taking their money out of the industry of making guns, the politics here are taking a step up. this is not any more about the optics of grieving parents and frustrated law enforcement and what everybody believes is going to be the futility of trying to change anything. this is about taking the argument that something must be d

was march nonviolently this distance, from the city of selma to the state capitol of alabama, to the state capitol, which is montgomery, about 50 miles away. they were stopped that first day when they were trying to march that distance before they ever got out of selma. here, trying to cross the alabama river to get out of town, to get out of selma, the 600 peaceful protesters were met by hundreds of alabama state police and local police. the policemen attacked the protesters. they used tear gas on them. they beat them with billy clubs. the protesters were whipped and stomped on by police horses. the leader of the march, john lewis, took a billy club to the head. he very easily could have died on that bridge that day. 17 of the marchers were sent to the hospital. that happened on sunday, bloody sunday, march 7th. now i said that they did not get out of selma that day when they were beaten on that bridge. but the nation was horrified. and the movement was galvanized. and two days after bloody sunday, two days later on tuesday, march 9th, they went back. only this time it was not 600 people

-election effort, they announced today that they'd be doing 100 events in cities across the country tomorrow to push for gun reform, everything from candlelight vigils to groups of people getting together to all write letters to the editor in favor of reform. the idea here is the same as having victims of gun violence turn up and introduce themselves and ask pointed questions at lawmakers' town hall meetings. it's the same idea as a pro-reform political action committee hanging the a rating from the nra around the neck of that congressional candidate in illinois to make it so she likely cannot win the democratic primary for congress because she is too close to the nra and that's not okay anymore, at least in democratic politics. it's the same thinking behind these near-daily events from vice president biden, all addressing the issue of gun reform. it's the same thinking as the almost as frequent mentions and events from president obama himself, including the long emotional case he made for reform in the state of the union. it's all the same idea, which is to change the political momentum on

jackson jr. resigned back in november. the district is in chicago, and in a chunk of the city's southern suburbs. it's a heavily democratic district. whoever wins the primary tomorrow is consider likely to win the seat overall and to take a seat in congress in april. because of the juicy democratic prospects, at the outset, 17 different democrats lined up to compete in this primary, which is crazy. the candidate with the most name recognition was former congresswoman debbie haverson, a reporter of gun rights who touts her a rating with the national rifle association. or who did tout that rating with the national rifle association before this year. because this is both the first election for federal office since we picked a president, and also the first federal election since newtown, since the elementary massacre at sandy hook elementary in december. even though she has touted her a rating from the nra in the past, now debbie haverson is now touting her support for universal background checks for gun purchases. this time around she insists she has not lobbied the nra for an endorsement.
